It's obvious throughout the country, and other countries as well that weight is a major factor in today's youth.

The real question is, who's at fault? Is it the parents who don't monitor the children's eating, or are too involved with other things to provide a good, healthy meal? Is it the media and places like McDonalds and KFC that are at fault?

How do you feel?

It's the parents fault, the sad thing is that so many parents don't realize it. All in all it's a lack of education. If people knew what to eat and what to do to be healthy and how easy it was to do, we wouldn't be having this problem. Even if parents aren't able to monitor their children's eating, it shouldn't be that big of a problem because who buys the food in the first place. If the parents buy healthy food they shouldn't have to worry about what their kids are eating when they're not there.

It's not the fastfood restarants fault, it's the law that they have to have the nutritional information on hand in the place. If you don't look at it, or ask for it that's your fault.

I agree, at least partially. However, children aren't with their parents at all times, what about when they're with their friends, classmates, ect?

in american society?! ALL of it, there is no one cause....even if the parents kept it healthy the media popularizes fast food i wasn't aloud fastfood until i was 9 or 10, i dislike fastfood but i wasn't aloud junkfood like potatochips untill about the same age and i'm addicted to doritos and the like.... both were restricted but i like one and not the other....though it's not all like that, i was alowd sweets and green vegies, sweets are promoted by media stimulants and veggies are dissed on, i don't like either(green makes me quezzy, i only eat picles and apples and only if i don't look at the pickles) this is one of those weird topics that have to many variables to stimulate to many good ideas...

Blaming the fast-food industry for making people obese is like blaming the cigarette companies for causing lung cancer, or like blaming gun manufacturers for high crime rates- it's not the things themselves that are causing the problems, it's the people who don't take them in moderation. I say yes, blame the parents for making their child obese. The parents aren't slaves to their child's every whim- if the kid wants to go to McDonalds for dinner, put your foot down and say, "No!" If the parents don't instill healthy eating habits in their kids now, when they're teenagers and have a job or some other way of making money, they're going to follow in the footsteps of their parents and not eat healthy. Of course, a rigid, totalitarian approach to what your kid eats isn't right either (i.e. planning out what your child will eat, with no input from him as to what he wants); a child should be provided with the opportunity to choose what he eats, within limits. But a parent shouldn't just stop at Burger King, just because the kid is screaming that he's starving to death and he can't wait 'til he gets home. Not only that, but if a child learns that he can get his mom or dad to do whatever the child wants when it comes to food, it'll be that much easier for the kid to manipulate the parents on bigger issues.

My point? Don't blame the fast-food companies for making our kids fat- blame the parents who are taking their kids to these places. Me? I don't eat out very much anymore; I used to, that's why I'm as overweight as I am. The parents need to choose to feed their kids healthy, enjoyable food; otherwise, when they turn old enough to choose for themselves, there'll be nothing to stop them from eating themselves to fast-food hell.

I agree! Plus, they could lower the prices of healthy food, that would help, huh?

Well , I am overweight.. and am a young teenager.
I personally blame myself , but my parents are sure not a big help. My mom rarely cooks anymore due to her own emotional problems. Therefore I'm stuck eating whatever is in my house. And , she doesn't go grocery shopping often due to her problems also.

And as a child , my parents pretty much let me eat whatever. I was remotely skinny as a child... but slowly got bigger. And now , I am very overweight. I'd love it if my parents would help me and diet with me... they always say it's my problem not there's. So , I'd have to say it is partially they're fault. Sure , places like Mcdonalds should not be as unhealthy , but they are not entirely to blame.

I think government , should really crack down on the FDA's regulations. And make it so food can only have certain amounts of sugar/carbs etc.
